Who doesn’t love nostalgia?
June 6 is National Drive-In Movie Day.
Whether you grew up going to them, love movies that feature them (Grease, anyone?), or just get the warm fuzzies when thinking of days gone by, few things say summer like watching a movie under the stars.
It’s National Drive-In Movie Day and we’ve got some great ways to get you and your family outdoors to enjoy each other and the beautiful summer nights.
In the Lincoln-Way area, be sure to check out the schedule for outdoor movies at our park districts. Frankfort shows Movies on the Green throughout summer at Briedert Green starting with “Honey I Shrunk the Kids,” on June 13 at dusk.
Check out the Frankfort Patch article with all the info here.
Mokena’s movies play throughout the summer at Yunker Park, also at dusk. The first is “Soul,” also scheduled for June 13. Mokena Patch has more here.
And in New Lenox, you can catch movies at the Village Commons, beginning with a showing of “Lightyear,” June 7 at 8:30PM. They also will be featuring “adult movies” – not that kind – on June 29 with “Maverick: Top Gun.” More info can be found on the village website here.
For all you Chicago peeps, the park district is offering Movies in the Park all summer long, which you can find on the Chicago Park District website.
For those wanting a real-life experience at an actual Drive-In, you’ll have travel a little bit outside the Chicagoland area. There are just a handful of actual Drive-Ins around the Chicagoland area.
The 49er Drive-In in Valparaiso, IN is about an hour from Mokena, and has been in business since 1956. And McHenry, IL is the home of Golden Age Studios, which has been showing movies since the 1940s.
Want to stay home and create your own Drive-In experience? You can buy, rent, or DIY your own large screen, gather some blankets and the popcorn, and don’t forget the bug spray! Project a movie right from your laptop to create a summer memory that will be nostalgia for your kids in the not-so-distant future!
Happy watching!
